After his resignation was accepted Fr. Arrupe gave a final message to the Society. Let us listen to those concluding words, expressed by Fr. Pedro before he entered into the silence of his personal surrender to God.
“To each one of you in particular I would love to say – tantas cosas: so much, really. From our young people I ask that they live in the presence of God and grow in holiness, as the best preparation for the future. Let them surrender to the will of God, at once so awesome and so familiar. With those who are at the peak of their apostolic activity, I plead that they do not burn themselves out. Let them find a proper balance by centering their lives on God, – not on their work – with an eye to the needs of the world, and a thought for the millions that do not know God or behave as if they did not. All are called to know and serve God. What a wonderful mission has been entrusted to us: to bring all to the knowledge and love of Christ! On those of my age I urge openness: let us learn what must be done now, and do it with a will. To our dear Brothers too, I would like to say tantas cosas – so much, and with such affection. I want to remind the whole Society of the importance of the Brothers: they help us to centre our vocation on God. I am full of hope, seeing the Society at the service of the one Lord and of the Church, under the Roman Pontiff, the Vicar of Christ on earth. May she keep going along this path, and may God bless us with many and good vocations of Priests and Brothers: for this I offer to the Lord what is left of my life, my prayers and the sufferings imposed by my ailments.”
Lord, I need your Spirit, that divine force that has transformed so many human personalities, making them capable of extraordinary deeds and extraordinary lives. Give me that Spirit which, coming from You and going to You, infinite Holiness, is a Holy Spirit.
Feeling the difficulty of my mission, I desire your profound action in my soul, not only that You descend but that You repose in me, and give me those wondrous gifts that You lavish on your elect: wisdom and intelligence, as to Solomon; counsel and strength, as to David; knowledge and fear of God, that was the ideal of so many holy souls of Israel. These gifts will open up for the Society an era of happiness and holiness.
Give me what you gave the Prophets. The word that came to them was not their own word but yours, of your Spirit sent to them not only to create a new personality for service but also to explain its sense and secrets, of your Spirit that is not only intelligence and strength but also knowledge of God and God’s ways.
Give me, then, the strength with which you not only opened up to the Prophets your word to the point of revealing to them your glory, but also that strength that kept them standing as they spoke to the people and announced their fate.
Give me that Spirit that scrutinizes all, inspires all, teaches all, that will strengthen me to support what I am not able to support. Give me that Spirit that transformed the weak Galilean fishermen into the columns of your Church and into Apostles who gave with their lives the supreme testimony of their love for their brothers.
Such was your definitive manifestation: the heavens open, a God the Father visible, a God the Son coming down to the earth and becoming man to save the world. This mystery that has now been revealed through the Spirit to his holy apostles and prophets was unknown to any men in past generations…
This, then, is what I pray, kneeling before the Father VENI SANCTE SPIRITUS! AMEN.
